ChatGPT Ads Explained: What Businesses Need to Know

People used to search on Google, scan ten links, and click through to a website. That was the basis of digital advertising for twenty years.

Now a lot of those same questions go to ChatGPT instead. People get an answer, act on it, and never visit a website at all.

Advertising is moving to where the attention is. Here is what your business needs to know.

What are ChatGPT ads?

They are sponsored placements that appear inside an AI assistant's answer, instead of next to a list of search results.

The main difference is context. A Google ad matches a keyword. A ChatGPT ad matches intent the AI already understands, including everything the person said earlier in the conversation. If someone spends three messages describing a problem before asking for a recommendation, the assistant knows far more about them than one search query would show.

That makes targeting sharper. It also makes space limited. A Google results page fits four ads at the top. A conversational answer fits maybe one suggestion before it stops feeling like an answer.

Where do they show up?

Four common formats:

• Sponsored suggestions inside the answer: A labelled recommendation within the response itself.
• Product cards: Visual cards with price and a buy link, similar to Google Shopping.
• Follow-up prompts: Suggested next questions that lead toward paid categories.
• Side placements: Ads next to the conversation rather than inside it.

These formats are still changing, so expect updates.

Can Indian businesses buy them?

Yes. That is the useful part.

New ad platforms usually reach India long after the US and UK. By then the cheap inventory is gone and everyone is bidding. This time access opened early.

Early ad inventory is always cheaper, because demand has not caught up yet. Businesses that tested Google Ads in 2005 or Meta in 2013 were not smarter advertisers. They just got in before the auction filled up. That window is open now.

Two things to keep in mind. Ad space inside a conversation is limited, so volume will be low. And there is very little performance data yet, so your first campaigns are for learning, not results. Treat it as a test budget.

The bigger change: getting mentioned without ads

This matters more than the ad formats.

When someone asks ChatGPT for the best accounting software for small businesses in India, it names specific companies. Nobody paid for those mentions. They come from what the AI has learned about each business from its website, reviews, press coverage, and structured data.

Getting named is the new first page of Google. Not getting named means you are invisible, no matter where you rank. And a free mention carries more trust than a sponsored one.

This is why SEO matters more than ad spend right now. A good SEO company in Kerala should already be working on this: answering questions directly instead of writing long filler content, adding proper schema markup, building mentions on sites AI models trust, and keeping business details consistent everywhere online.

What to do now?

1. Check how AI describes you: Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity about your business and your industry. See what they get wrong and which competitors they name instead of you. Takes twenty minutes.
2. Fix your structured data: Schema markup, clear headings, accurate information. AI systems read well-structured pages much better than decorative ones.
3. Write clear answers: Each section should make sense on its own. If a paragraph cannot stand alone, it will not get quoted.
4. Track where leads come from: Add a “how did you hear about us” field to your forms. AI traffic does not show up properly in analytics, so this is your best signal.
5. Run a small test campaign: Set a budget you can afford to lose, pick one goal, and set up tracking before you launch.
6. Do not cut what already works: Google still brings most commercial search traffic in India. Any digital marketing agency in Kerala telling you to move real budget away from it is following headlines, not data.

The short version

Two things to get right. Make your website clear enough that AI systems pick you on their own. And use the early ad window to learn how these placements work while it is still cheap.

Neither one needs a big budget to start.

Need help with this?

Start with an audit, not a campaign. Find out how AI systems describe your business today and which competitors come up instead. That tells you whether you have an ads problem or an SEO problem. Usually it is SEO.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ChatGPT ads available in India?

Yes. Indian businesses can run them, which is earlier than most new ad platforms reach this market. Check the current placement types and billing terms in the advertiser documentation before setting up a campaign, since the platform is still changing.

How much should a first ChatGPT ad campaign cost?

Set a budget you can afford to lose completely. There is very little public performance data yet, so early spending buys you learning rather than predictable results. Pick one goal, set up tracking before launch, and run it long enough to see a pattern before judging it.

Which types of businesses suit ChatGPT ads best?

Anything people research through questions rather than short keywords. Software, professional services, travel, education and considered purchases fit well, because buyers describe a problem before asking for a recommendation. Impulse purchases and very local services see less benefit for now.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT answers without paying?

Through SEO. AI systems build their understanding of your business from your website, reviews, press coverage and structured data. Clear content, proper schema markup and consistent business details across the web all help. A free mention also carries more trust than a sponsored one, so this work is worth doing regardless of ad spend.

How do I track results from AI traffic?

Poorly, if you rely only on analytics. Referrals from AI assistants often arrive without clean source data. Add a “how did you hear about us” field to your enquiry forms and review it monthly. Self-reported attribution is currently the most reliable signal available, and any good digital marketing company in Kerala should be setting this up for clients now.

Do I need to rebuild my website for AI search?

Usually not. Most of the work is technical cleanup on your existing site: schema markup, heading structure, accurate business information, and content that answers real questions directly. The best digital marketing agency in Kerala for this job is one that audits what you have before recommending a rebuild.
